Having lived in London for a couple of years, we have discovered a bunch of charming places that a first time visitor would likely not see on a quick visit. Here are my favourites. They are all free so if you are in the vicinity, pop by for a look!
- Take a memorable photo at St Paul’s Reflection Garden – the massive cathedral is a must-see for any visitor to London but not far from the cathedral is a quiet secret garden with a reflection pond for the most gorgeous photos. The mirror-like stillness of the reflection pond, creates an upside down second image of the cathedral making for a really special photo of your visit.
- Enjoy the panoramic sky-high views from Sky Garden, Horizon 22 or The Lookout – The views from these skyscrapers are absolutely breathtaking. It’s free to go up there but bookings are strongly recommended especially for Horizon 22 and Sky Garden. It is often possible to go up The Lookout without a booking. Forego the pricey views from The Shard or The London Eye. Another less high but still delightful viewpoint in the vicinity of the CIty of London is The Garden at 120. Bookings are not required for this one.
- Find some nature near Covent Garden in the grounds of Actors Church – This church is also called St Paul’s Church, not to be mistaken for St Paul’s Cathedral, this one is located at Covent Garden. This area is usually thronged with tourists and buskers. Sometimes, you might want to find a quieter space to eat some lunch or just to decompress from the maddening crowds, The gardens and grounds of this church are lovely especially when the flowers are blooming.
- Eat and shop along an Sunday East London market walk – Enjoy a pleasant Sunday stroll visiting some of East London’s Sunday-only markets. Start at about 11am at Broadway Market and head south via Columbia Road Flower Markets, Brick Lane, Old Spitalfields Market and Petticoat Lane Market. Each market has its own distinct vibe. This is one of my favourite walks on a Sunday.
- Feel the serenity at Sir John’s Lodge Gardens – beautiful, secret gardens tucked inside Regent’s Park. You’ll feel like you’ve stumbled upon something very few know about.
- Marvel at the mosaics at Fitzrovia Chapel – This chapel is an enchanting jewel of Byzantine inspired architecture located in the heart of the Fitzrovia community. Best to check the opening hours before visiting as these can be limited.
- Take in the culture at Wallace Collection – an art museum in Marylebone with lots of beautiful pieces, gorgeous rooms and without the size or the crowds of the National Gallery!
- Stare in awe at the jewellery collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum – not so much a hidden gem but is one of the less visited museums despite having a massive collection.
- Rest your feet while being entertained at Outernet near Tottenham Court Road – a massive digital exhibition space with floor to ceiling LED screens.
- Use the free toilets at the vaulted crypt at St Martins in the Fields Church – This church is conveniently located right next to Trafalgar Square.
- Enjoy London’s seasonal special events – These are worth a look if the timing of your visit coincides.
– Chelsea in Bloom – May – stunning floral displays in the posh suburb of Chelsea.
– Open House London – September – the world’s largest architecture festival offering free access to buildings , walks, talks and tours.
– Free outdoor movies – Summer – various locations
Hope these help make you visit to London just that little bit more memorable.
